Since Schaulager opened in 2003, numerous exhibitions have been organised and presented to the general public. The presentations are complex individual exhibition projects conceived in close cooperation between the artists and Schaulager’s team of curators. These exhibitions are routinely accompanied by comprehensive exhibition catalogues contributing to the scholarly discourse on the respective artistic positions. A specific programme of events further promotes the engagement with selected artistic perspectives.

OUT OF THE BOX

20 years Schaulager. Most of the works on display were acquired in recent years for the collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation.

Catasterism in Three Movements

Performance project at Schaulager Basel commissioned by Laurenz Foundation; produced by Matthew Barney and Jonathan Bepler.

Bruce Nauman

The retrospective organized in 2018 in honour of Bruce Nauman’s unique oeuvre spans five decades; it is of unprecedented diversity.

David Claerbout

Schaulager hosts in 2017 David Claerbout’s project Olympia. The real-time disintegration into ruins of the Berlin Olympic stadium over the course of a thousand years. It is conceived to last for thousand years.

Zita-Щara

Visitors are surprised by the intensity of a mere seven works in three rooms in the precisely conceived project “Zita – Щapa. Chamber piece by Katharina Fritsch and Alexej Koschkarow” in 2016.

Future Present

The Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation presents in 2015 a selection of works from the collection in an exhibition entitled “Contemporary Art from Classic Modernism to the Present Day”.

Paul Chan

In his largest and most comprehensive exhibition to date, Paul Chan combines in 2014 existing and new works to create an artfully conceived overall production.

Steve McQueen

In 2013 Schaulager showcases the multifarious oeuvre of the video artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen by building a veritable City of Cinemas.

Francis Alÿs: Fabiola

Francis Alÿs has collected images of Saint Fabiola painted by amateurs for nearly twenty years. The impressive collection is presented in 2011 at Haus zum Kirschgarten.

Matthew Barney

Matthew Barney’s multi-part series Drawing Restraint is exhibited in juxtaposition with selected works of art from the Northern Renaissance in 2010.

Holbein to Tillmans

In 2009, a selection of nearly 200 works from the collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Emanuel Hoffman Foundation combines Old Master works with contemporary art.

1:1

Monika Sosnowska’s architectonic sculptures – some of them monumental in scale - encounter the fusion of art and design in Andrea Zittel’s work in the exhibition of 2008.

Robert Gober

Some forty sculptures, five large-scale installations and several groups of drawings are on view in the most extensive exhibition so far dedicated to Robert Gober in 2007.

Tacita Dean / Francis Alÿs

The ongoing Sign Painting Project by Francis Alÿs accompanies in 2006 the films, photographs and drawings by Tacita Dean.

Jeff Wall

The most comprehensive exhibition ever by Jeff Wall brings together in 2005 some seventy photographic images from 1978 to 2004, mounted on light boxes.

Herzog & de Meuron

In 2004 the second exhibition since the opening of the institution is a highly unusual, archival presentation of projects by architects Herzog & de Meuron, who also built Schaulager.

Dieter Roth

In 2003 Schaulager is inaugurated with an all-embracing, no-holds-barred retrospective, dedicated to one of the greats of contemporary art: Dieter Roth
