The agreement between the two parties gives the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel the freedom to “exhibit only a part of the loans, based on the available space and its aesthetic preferences” and “combine them appropriately with its own collections”.
The works held by the Foundation have been exhibited since 1941 in changing presentations at Kunstmuseum Basel | main building, since 1980 at Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart (formerly Museum für Gegenwartskunst) and since 2016 also at the Kunstmuseum Basel | new building, along with works from the collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel. Thanks to the intensive partnership between the two institutions, iconic works such as Salvador Dalí’s Girafe en feu (c. 1936/37), Robert Delaunay’s La Tour Eiffel (1910-1911) and Joseph Beuys’ Schneefall (1965) are permanent fixtures in the presentation of the Kunstmuseum collection and have become inextricably associated with Basel.
