Anri Sala

2027

Anri Sala, Manifestations of motion and affect, detail, 2014, series of 5 drawings, pencil and eraser on paper, 42 × 29.7 cm, © Anri Sala

Schaulager Basel will be presenting a large-scale, solo exhibition dedicated to the internationally renowned artist Anri Sala in 2027. Key works in Sala’s oeuvre will be on view in addition to more recent media installations and performative pieces, offering an in-depth insight into the artist’s wide-ranging work.

Anri Sala is widely regarded as one of the outstanding artists of his generation. His time-based works explore the complex relationships between image, architecture, and music, examining the intricate and dynamic interplay between these elements, with a particular emphasis on what happens in between. Sala explains: “My fascination is about the interval, it’s about the instant between two moments, the in-between. When something has just happened, and the next thing is about to become.”

“We have been following Anri Sala’s artistic career for over twenty years and he plays a crucial role in the collection of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation. We greatly anticipate working with Anri again and are proud to showcase his oeuvre in our ongoing series of pioneering Schaulager exhibitions.” (Maja Oeri, President of Schaulager/Laurenz Foundation and Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation)

A substantial publication, illuminating the art historical context of Anri Sala’s oeuvre, will accompany the exhibition.

Anri Sala was born in Tirana, Albania in 1974. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Bourse de Commerce, Paris (2023); Kunsthaus Bregenz (2021); Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern, Houston (2021); Centro Botìn, Santander (2019); Mudam, Luxembourg (2019); Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Turin (2019); Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2017); New Museum, New York (2016); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2014); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2012); Serpentine Gallery, London (2011); Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (2008); and ARC, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2004). He has also participated in major group exhibitions and biennials internationally, including the 57th Venice Biennale (2019), dOCUMENTA (13) (2012), the 29th São Paulo Biennial (2010) and the 4th Berlin Biennale (2006). In 2013, he represented France in the 55th Venice Biennale. In 2001, Sala received the Young Artist Prize at the Venice Biennale and was awarded the Vincent van Gogh Biennial Award for Contemporary Art in Europe in 2014.

In summer 2024, the frescoes by Anri Sala acquired for the collection were presented in the Old Masters department of the Kunstmuseum Basel.
