With Time and Experience, Stadtkino Basel presents a curated selection of works by British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen, alongside films by other directors whose themes and storytelling resonate with his. Time and Experience explores how McQueen and others understand history – not as something confined to the past, but as something lived: shaped by emotion, memory, and the textures of everyday life.

In addition to McQueen’s most recent feature film Blitz (2024), the program includes the documentary Occupied City (2023), the film series Small Axe (2020, five films), and the series Uprising (2021, three episodes), which McQueen produced for the BBC. In addition, selected films by Bianca Stigter, Franco Rosso, and John Akomfrah will be screened.

Stadtkino is also pleased to welcome a number of distinguished guests — Steve McQueen, Bianca Stigter, Paul Gilroy, and Dennis Bovell — for conversations about the films.

The program has been developed in close collaboration with the Laurenz Foundation, Schaulager Basel, and the Department of Art History at the University of Basel, and in dialogue with the artist.
