Photographer Thomas Ruff studied fractals in making his latest series, d.o.pe. (2022) – a delight for lovers of mathematics. Geometric patterns that show so-called self-similarity are known as fractals – closer study of their ornamental structure reveals the same element in endless repetition. Ruff used special software to explore this visual universe and generate renderings, which he then had printed on velour carpets. Fascinating hybrids emerged in psychedelic colours – the title d.o.pe. alludes to the book The Doors of Perception (1954), in which Aldous Huxley gives an account of his experiences with the hallucinogenic drug mescaline.

On view in the exhibition is a series of photographs and a monumental video piece. In five Nightscape Lightboxes (2003), Claerbout shows forest landscapes so dark that we must wait for our vision to adjust before being able to distinguish anything. The digital video installation Wildfire (Meditation on Fire) (2019-2020) presents a tracking shot across the still image of a forest fire. Although extremely distinct works at first sight, the two presentations share the theme of a (coniferous-)forest with its artistic, cultural and historical references dating back to modern times. This selection of Claerbout’s work explores the limits of human perception and humanity’s increasingly pervasive domination of nature, made possible by digital and other technolgies.

Straightforward, but often physically challenging sequences of movement define the structure of Klara Lidén’s performative video works. The internationally renowned artist probes the limits of social and cultural norms in public space and raises fundamental questions about the use and standardization of urban space. How does my body fit into this world? What can I achieve with it? In so doing, she often subjects herself to precarious situations, somersaulting, for instance, down a steep street in Mediterranean Marseille or climbing underneath the Underground in Berlin.

In Gary Hill’s monumental video installation Circular Breathing, electronic images migrate across five gigantic screens. Tension is generated by the time that they share in the projection, slowing down, interrupted, accelerated. Mathematically calculated light impulses create a flickering light sculpture that is simultaneously a meditation on time, memory and the past. Different shots, from the detail of a face in close-up to the longshot of an ocean, merge into an endless temporal flow of experimental and processual worlds. But how do these visceral rivers of image and sound function, in fact, what are electronic images and how has their aesthetic changed under the influence of different media formats and digitalizations? Where does video stand in the context of other media and technological means of image processing – then and now?

In his late masterpiece, the artist Dieter Roth reflects on his everyday life with the video camera. Over 100 videos run simultaneously in the installation. How does one deal with the complex work? Is it an authentic documentation or a staged production? Which image of the artist is conveyed? What does one learn about Dieter Roth? What is the position of the late work in the overall oeuvre?
The event invites to take a close look at the Solo Scenes and to explore them in conversation.
