Lidén realized Closer Now for a solo exhibition at OCT0 Productions in Marseille. The work consists of a video projection and three cardboard boxes that are suspended from the ceiling by string. Powered by a motor, they slowly rotate around their own axes. When stacked, the height of the boxes corresponds to that of the artist. Beginning with the lowest section, the legs, then the torso and head are placed staggered on top of each other.
The rotation of the boxes reflects the movement of the artist in the video. Lidén rolls down a steep, narrow street, the Rue Barbaroux in Marseille, bordered by parked cars on one side and a sidewalk on the other. She adapts the dynamic, impulsive movement of the wheel that ordinarily dominates the streets, rolling forwards and sideways and repeatedly becoming disoriented: we experience how tedious, painful, and dizzying her progress is. The performance is accompanied by a composition by the Swedish musicians and artists Paul Sigerhall and Andreas Nelson, who often collaborate with Lidén.
Klara Lidén (b. 1979, Stockholm, Sweden) takes a socially critical look at themes of resistance and civil disobedience. The artist works with her own body, exposing it in a built environment and obsessive world through video, sculpture, and installation. Klara Lidén lives and works in Berlin and New York.
